Eight Easy Ways to Self Care at Work

Do you think about self care while you are working?  We know that self care is important and it may seem like you can't focus on your needs and your work at the same time but you can and should if you want to be healthier and more productive.  Here are some of our favorite ways to practice self care while on the clock:

1. If you sit at a desk most of the day, make it a mini sanctuary.  Easy ways to do this are to surround your work area with a few plants- proven to help relieve stress.  Also, removing your shoes when appropriate can help relax the muscles in your feet, making you less tense overall.  Another stress reducer can be found in surrounding yourself with calming pictures.  This may include friends, family or destinations- anything that brings serenity to your day.


2. Reset your brain every few hours.  This can be accomplished by simply taking a few minutes to go for a walk or stretch your muscles for a few minutes.  If time permits try to focus on something non work related.  Read a book, listen to music, have a conversation about something other than deadlines and reports.


3. Try a fidget spinner.  These toys became popular for a reason.  They are useful to release nervous energy and serve as a quick distraction when needed.  The best part is this small toy can fit in your pocket or purse.


4. Breathe. Re-oxygenate your body by taking three deep breaths.  Take a minute to check in with each part of your body as you let the air in and out.


5. Try a meditation app.  There are a plethora of programs available that provide anywhere from a 5 minute to hour long meditation sessions.


6. Drink an extra glass of water today.  Drinking water increases brain power and provides energy.  


7. Cross that lingering thing off of your to do list.  Start your day by getting it done.  Good rule of thumb so things don't pile up is if takes less than five minutes don't even put it on the list- just get it done.


8. Enlist help when needed.  Self care is not a one person show.  Ask others to look over your work, help declutter an area, anything that will help reduce your stress level and increase your focus.
